Prototype

This prototype was built in two weeks for the PirateSoftware Game Jam.

The theme for the game jam was: Do No Harm

The idea was to take the shmup genre and twist it so the challenge was to NOT shoot anything. This resulted in having a scenario which forces the player to fire their weapons and risk failing the objective for their own self preservation.

The ship increases in size as you hold off from firing the weapon, this makes movement more difficult, further incentivising rapid fire.

I chose to build this in Unity as a crash course to learn the engine.

Future Potential

This game could be fleshed out to include bonuses for playing risky. Feedback in testing suggested players may enjoy edging the ship at the brink of exploding for points.

There are a few more stage ideas I have sketched out. Set pieces such as highway traffic and destructible obstacle courses. But without more research into similar games, the gimmick of this game is inherently limited as it goes against the grain of the genre.

Post Mortem

Unity was probably tougher to get a grip of over Godot, especially since I already tried Unity before and relied on existing experience.

I hope to get to a point where I don't feel like I'm working against Unity.

I'm happy I was able to get what I had envisioned onto the screen though.

It was surprisingly hard not to shoot innocents! Love it.

A big lesson in difficulty has been learned. I ought to have made the warning lights show earlier.

Thanks for playing!
